July Newsletter: Leaving My Garden Behind (and Hoping for the Best!)

Hello Garden Friends,

This summer I’m doing something a little different — I planted my root crops and then hit the road! You can follow my travels on Sharing My Van Life on youtube.

My carrots, potatoes, beets, and other underground treasures are now on their own while I travel. I’m hoping for enough rain, healthy soil, and a little help from nature to keep things growing until I return in September for the big harvest.

Of course, there are always questions:

* Will the garden get enough water?

* Will weeds take over?

* Will the wildlife find my crops before I do?

But gardening has always been a lesson in letting go. We can prepare, plant, mulch, and nurture… but eventually nature takes over.

A few things I did before leaving:

🌿 Planted crops that don’t need daily attention

🌿 Added mulch to help hold moisture

🌿 Gave everything a good watering before leaving

🌿 Accepted that the garden may surprise me when I return!

🌿 I put up wire cages to hopefully keep the rabbits out of my carrots and beets.

If you’re travelling this summer, don’t feel like you have to abandon gardening completely. Some crops are much more forgiving than others, and a little planning can give you a harvest to look forward to.

I’ll share the results when I return in September — hopefully with baskets full of vegetables!
