Hello, May Garden Update: Gardening Through the Seasons – Even When Snow Is Still Falling
May looks very different depending on where you live. Here in Northern Alberta, there’s still snow on the ground and gardening season feels far away. While many gardeners are planting outdoors, colder regions are still waiting patiently for the soil to warm and dry.
The good news? May is still a busy and important month for gardeners — even if you can’t get into the garden yet. What Northern Gardeners Can Do in MayIf your garden beds are still covered in snow or too wet to work, this is the perfect time to prepare behind the scenes.1. Start Seeds Indoors
Cool-season crops can often be started indoors now:
* Tomatoes * Peppers * Herbs * Cabbage * Broccoli * Lettuce Give seedlings plenty of light and rotate trays regularly so plants grow evenly. 2. Plan Your Garden LayoutUse this waiting period to sketch your garden:* Decide where each crop will go * Rotate plant families from last year * Plan companion planting * Leave room for pathways and easy watering 3. Clean & Organize Garden SuppliesBefore the rush begins: * Sharpen pruners and tools * Clean seed trays and pots * Check hoses and watering equipment * Organize seeds by planting dates
4. Watch Soil Conditions CarefullyEven when snow melts, avoid working wet soil too early. Walking or digging in soggy beds can compact the soil and damage its structure. For Warmer Gardening Zones
If you live in a milder area, May is often prime planting time.
Great Crops to Plant in May* Carrots* Beets * Lettuce * Radishes * Peas * Spinach * Potatoes * Onion sets Warm regions may also begin transplanting: * Tomatoes * Cucumbers * Squash * Beans Always watch your local frost dates before planting tender crops outdoors. May Gardening Tip: Don’t Rush the Season
One of the hardest things for gardeners is waiting. But planting too early can slow growth or damage young plants.
Remember: * Soil temperature matters more than calendar dates * Warm soil equals stronger roots * Patience often leads to healthier gardens Simple May Garden Checklist✔ Start or continue indoor seedlings✔ Clean and prepare tools ✔ Make a planting plan ✔ Watch frost forecasts ✔ Add compost when soil is workable ✔ Stay ready for sudden warm weather Garden Inspiration for MayEven if your garden still looks like winter, this is the month where gardening season truly begins — through planning, preparing, and dreaming.Every garden starts with patience.
