Vegetable Gardening Hints, March 2026
March 01, 2026
Hello,

March Garden Kickstart

March is when gardeners get excited… and make mistakes.

The snow may still be falling or melting (especially here in Canada), but this is the most important month to set your garden up for success.

Here’s your simple March plan:

1. Start These Indoors

If you’re in a colder climate:

   •   Tomatoes

   •   Peppers

   •   Onions

   •   Broccoli

   •   Cabbage

Start them in seed trays with good light — not just a sunny window. Check out my article on caring for your Seedlings

2. Direct Sow (If Soil Is Workable)

  •   Spinach

   •   Lettuce

   •   Peas

   •   Radishes

   •   Carrots

Cool-season crops LOVE chilly soil.

3. Wake Up Your Soil

Before planting anything:

   •   Add compost

   •   Loosen compacted areas

   •   Remove leftover debris

   •   Avoid walking on wet soil

Healthy soil = healthy vegetables. Learn more about Soil preparation

March Mistake to Avoid

Planting warm crops too early.

Tomatoes and cucumbers will NOT tolerate frost. Patience now saves heartbreak later.

Your Simple Win This Month

Plant a small row of radishes.

They sprout fast, grow quickly, and give you that early gardening confidence boost.

Happy planting,

Catherine
