Vegetable Gardening Hints, June 2016
June 04, 2016
Can your veggie plants get too much sun?
When planning a new garden patch or expanding your existing growing area the amount of sunlight the area gets during the day is important, keeping in mind that the sun alters its path during the year. A certain amount of sunlight is essential for growing vegetables.
How much sunlight is needed for growing vegetables?Light is one of the most important elements in growing veggies and is probably the one that we have least control over. When growing vegetables consider the amount of light your area will be getting.
Most vegetables need an average of 6 hours of sunlight. Do not be too concerned if your garden plot is in a shady area as leaf and root vegetables ( lettuce, peas, carrots, kale, swiss chard ) will tolerate some shade.
Vegetables that produce fruit ( tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, squash ) are the ones that need full sun - but these can easily be grown in containers on a sunny patio. Container gardening is a wonderful way to grow your vegetables.
As I said, sunlight is important however too much HEAT from the sun can be harmful the your plants - can burn the leaves, stunt the growth or even kill young plants. At this time of year you are setting out young transplants or young shoots are popping out the the ground from seeds. These young plants are small and shallow rooted making them very susceptible to the mid day and afternoon heat.
If you have a container garden you can move the pot out of the mid day heat.

I am starting my 2016 road trip. I would love to drop by to see your garden! This year I am staying closer to home. I am traveling through British Columbia and Alberta, the two most western provinces in Canada. I have travelled both several times as my parents live in northern Alberta however this year I am going to take my time visiting some gardens and spending some time writing.
